Why is the FBI at the home of Rep. Cuellar?

Rep. Henry Cuellar is a moderate Texas Democrat who is sometimes at odds with his own party on issues like border control. Today, a reporter named Valerie Gonzalez is reporting that the FBI has shown up at Rep. Cuellar’s home and is currently investigating something.

The FBI is conducting what it described as “court-authorized” law enforcement activity at the Laredo home of U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar…

“The FBI was present in the vicinity of Windridge Drive and Estate Drive in Laredo conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity,” the [FBI] statement read. “The FBI cannot provide further comment on an ongoing investigation.”

At Cuellar’s home, located in the 8200 block of Estate Drive, federal vehicles were seen with cases and other items taken from the congressman’s home as over a dozen agents filed in and out of the residence Wednesday afternoon.

So I guess we know who sold Ashley Biden’s diary. Okay, just kidding. It’s probably not that. The same reporter is at the scene taking photos (the photo above is hers):

Attempts to reach Rep. Cuellar have been unsuccesfful.

However she says Cuellar’s office has issued a brief statement.

Obviously all of this is bad news when you have a primary coming up in a few weeks:

Cuellar is a favorite Democrat among his Texas Republican colleagues, and his moderate voting record has earned the ire of the left. He will face what is expected to be a fierce rematch in his party’s March 1 primary against attorney Jessica Cisneros. Another Democrat, former educator Tannya Benavides, is also in the race.

Cuellar has increasingly become a figure of derision among progressives in recent years. He will sometimes join Republicans to vote against Democratic priorities, particularly on abortion…

Webb County-Zapata County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz said he is unaware of what prompted the FBI investigation. He said Cuellar is revered in the South Texas community and has proved to be accessible to local officials and community members.

Alaniz said he believes the timing of the FBI raid is “questionable” and worries it may adversely affect Cuellar’s reelection campaign.

We’ll have a better idea if the raid was questionable once we know what it was about but so far no one is saying. Maybe tomorrow we’ll get some kind of explanation.
