WATCH: Bill Maher Rips Cryptocurrency: ‘No Actual Product Made Or Service Rendered’

Comedian Bill Maher denounced cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Dogecoin, etc.) as nothing more than a fantasy that renders nothing on society.

During his HBO show “Real Time” on Friday night, the comedian labeled “cryptocurrency” a Ponzi scheme that wreaks environmental damage due to the amount of electrical energy its supercomputers consume.

“Nothing with ‘crypto’ in the title ever turned out good. There is a mania rising in the nation these days,” he began.

“I fully understand that our financial system isn’t perfect, but at least it’s real. Apple stock is worth money because Apple makes thousand-dollar phones that everyone buys and drops in the toilet,” Maher added.

Though Maher admitted that capitalism (the Wall Street type) does dabble in immaterial speculation, the money it uses ultimately “had to originate from and be generated by something real, somewhere. To which cryptocurrency says, ‘No, it doesn’t.’”

“Nothing is ever actually being accomplished and no actual product made or service rendered,” Maher alleged. “It’s like Tinker Bell’s light. Its power source is based solely on enough children believing in it. Our problem is not economic but psychological. People who have been raised in a virtual world are starting to believe they can really live in it.”

Laying the progressive messaging on thick, Maher then criticized cryptocurrency for the amount of energy it utilizes, alleging that it contributes to climate change.

“I mean, cars are bad for the climate, but at least they take you somewhere,” Maher said.

In the same segment, Maher also severely criticized the Oscars and its poor ratings.

“It used to get Super Bowl numbers,” he said. “It’s like the winner who thanks everyone, says ‘Go to bed kids’ — and the babysitter texts back, ‘They already did.’”

“No jokes, no songs, not even any clips of when we used to have fun,” he added.

Maher also poked fun of this year’s Best Picture winner, “Nomadland.”

“Move over That Girl, Mary Tyler Moore, and Alice. There’s a new girl in town and she’s sh-tting in a bucket,” he said. “We love that she drifts around in a van, but can she be 19 and hot? Maybe give her a different supporting cast. A handsome guy, a funny guy, a lesbian best friend and a dog? They can solve mysteries. Call me.”

Last week, Bill Maher also excoriated Millennials for thinking they are smarter than the older generation.

“You know the reason why advertisers in this country love the 18 to 34 demographic?” Maher said. “Because it’s the most gullible. Yeah. A third of people under 35 say they’re in favor of abolishing the police — not defunding, but doing away with a police force altogether, which is less of a policy position and more of a leg tattoo. Thirty-six percent of millennials think it might be a good idea to try communism, but much of the world did try it.”

“I know, millennials think that doesn’t count because they weren’t alive when it happened. But it did happen. And there are people around who remember it. Pining for communism?” he continued. “It’s like pining for Betamax or Myspace. So when you say you’re old, you don’t get it. Get what? Abolish the police and the Border Patrol and capitalism and cancel Lincoln? No, I get it. The problem isn’t that I don’t get what you’re saying or that I’m old. The problem is that your ideas are stupid.”
